Cross Border Collaboration - Video Artivists in AP Unite!
From Transmission
Why a network?
- A chance to to exchange content - films, resources and footage
Previous collaboration between Australians and Jakarta
- Exchange with RuangRupa and Taring Padi in Banung
- Comparing situation with Sydney
- Spontaneous exchanges
- Was important because of existing cooperation between governments
- Partly funded by Australian-Indonesian Institute and the NSW Council for the Arts
Restrictions brought by funding
- Public space for market
- Some of the films that were screened were censored.
Asia Video Artivist Network
- Proposed in Hong Kong 2 years ago but was difficult to form then
- Main goal was to exchange content
- It's easier to rip and upload films vs mailing them. Some problems with post include films getting destroyed by immigration.
A website
- Should we start a website to download films from? More discussion needed among everyone incl techies.
- Archive should be categorise by countries an bilingual
- Upload films feature? OR should this be in separate existing websites and the network be used merely to link to these films?
- Space is important - HDD space is cheap.
- Can also email videos to the network to host if there isn't any other place
- Other features - thumbnails, forum, easy to browse and search, share footage, high quality videos
- EASY to use!
- A discussion forum?
Web Hosting for video archive if we're setting up one
- Where? Need to research more.
Working Group for Tech issues
- Kris will coordinate with Lachlan, Andycat, and the other EngageMedia guys on this
Website + Miro
- We could pull a list of feeds from the websites of the network's members with descriptions
- This way it would be decentralised
- BitTorrent could be used to distribute films
- Viewable by public but listings only for members
Production Collaboration
- Some still skeptical about collaborative editing using online tools because of reliability issues
Funding
- Everyone contributes
- Depends on each project
- Possible sources of funding:
- Arts Network Asia
- Arts Collaboratory (RuangRupa is an advisory member)
Collaborate
- Share film crews
Artivist Residences
- A good way to work and learn on-site
- 6 week programs?
e.g. RuangRupa and their hosted Projects
- Mobility and evictions
- Art projects
- Urbanisation
Why only AP?
- We shouldn't stereotype and exclude non-AP countries
- What is AP anyway?
- Non-AP organisers might dominate because of economic power, etc but this could be balanced out by power sharing
- If we only limit it to AP, then what about...
- AP migrants in Europe and the US?
- the Middle East??
- Separating networks by regions will also force us to repeat a lot of work
- Network should be goal focused instead of regional?
