Net Neutrality
Notes on the Net Neutrality presentation by Simon Worthington, direct from IRC #Transmission.cc
We mainly talked about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_Neutrality and http://creativecommons.org/
13:13 < simon-w-speaking> ISPs want part of the web 2.0 data transit money-making machines like Google
13:13 < simon-w-speaking> they look for ways to share in the capitalisation of user-generated content transit
13:13 < simon-w-speaking> there's a commercial rivalry between the user-generated content profitmakers and the isps
13:14 < simon-w-speaking> the peer infrastructure status of the internet could be diminished in this rivalry
13:14 < simon-w-speaking> in terms of the kind of business model that is coming into place (user generated content, watching adverts) - is that a realistic future for business online?
13:15 < simon-w-speaking> will governments regulate to reinforce the free/openness of the networks
13:15 < simon-w-speaking> the big dangers are that suddenly we have to pay for packet transit
13:15 < simon-w-speaking> another major issue in Net Neutrality is peering between regions of the world
13:15 < simon-w-speaking> there's a possibility that there could be barriers and tariffs on international transit
13:16 * simon-w-speaking actually thinks that's rather unlikely as such
13:16 < simon-w-speaking> Community media in the US are doing lots with local cable and TV / Satellite usage.
13:16 < simon-w-speaking> they get part of their revenue from the goverment
13:16 < simon-w-speaking> they also get guaranteed access to media.
13:17 < simon-w-speaking> a commercial cable/satellite provider has to give some capacity to these community-based groups
13:17 < simon-w-speaking> so the US-based community media groups are worried about losing that subsidy
13:17 < simon-w-speaking> Things are quite different in the UK and Europe.
13:17 < simon-w-speaking> the UK has a far more monolithic media scene with different problems/capacities.
13:17 < simon-w-speaking> In the next year, Net Neutrality will be so hot.
13:18 < simon-w-speaking> because of mid-term elections in the us, things are kind of on hold
13:18 * simon-w-speaking has presented some of the corners
13:18 < simon-w-speaking> saul talks about free networks
13:19 < simon-w-speaking> free networks are people who research building community information infrastructures
13:19 < simon-w-speaking> like regional wireless broadband networks
13:19 < simon-w-speaking> setting up mobile phone infrastructure
13:19 < simon-w-speaking> it's like a television coop
