Aims

  • To create a DVD / Downloadable video files with 5/6 video short segments with multiple subtitle files to test a workflow for the remote collaboration of multiple individuals / organisations.
  • To test our Documentation of this process and the "how to" help files.

Suggested Films

Suggested films for use for this Translation Project

Previous project

A film of Retransmission in London was uploaded as an mpeg2 file (NTSC) to test if a Multi-lingual DVD could be created by online collaborators. The zip file of the DVD is downloadable here. http://www.clearerchannel.org/VIDEO_TS_transsubs.zip

Method

  • Choose a 5/6 pieces of video with a a minimal amount of text.
  • A collective/ individual takes on the each file as a translation project. They make sure the following steps happen.
  • The segment is encoded to identical length PAL versions of mpg2 and mpeg4/ xvid for preview. Both files are uploaded to the internet [archive.org suggested for Mpeg2 files]

Example: Mpeg2 File : http://www.archive.org/details/retransmission xvid preview file : http://enr.clearerchannel.org/media/trans_sub_project/

  • Details of the Video file and the location of the Mpeg2 and preview file and the email contact of the translation co-ordinator for that video are posted to a project page. Suggested either a wiki page [ wiki.transmission.cc or a video page on http://www.tranmission.cc ]
  • An original language subtitle file in srt format of the encoded file is uploaded to this wiki / drupal page.

Example subtitle file http://www.clearerchannel.org/wiki/images/c/c9/Transmission_report_xvid_700kps_mp3_128.srt

  • A project page is created linking to all the Video project pages for translations. And details of the translation project are sent out to translators
  • Translation collectives / individual translators download this file, translate it to different languages and email it to the video translation co-ordinator for each video
  • When all translations are completed [or at a designated time limit] (a) production collective/s can download all the subtitle files, and original video files and make a multi-lingual DVD, and multilingual Matroska file for download or burn the subtitle file and the Video file together to make a DVavi for export to tape, and create a Video showcase website for the online video with the subtitles available in various languages. example http://g8tv.org
  • END TARGET RESULT: The DVD, Matroska file, Dvavi is uploaded and distributed online or the exported project is distributed on tape or DVD.
  • END ADDITIONAL RESULT: Video files and subtitle files are downloaded by individuals / collectives, and can be used to view / screen the subtitle file over the video file.
