Some forms of sustainable income streams are: selling things such as video, DVD, fundraising, screenings, grants from foundations.

Although sometimes having volunteers withing an organisation can be another alternative to sustainable organising.

Contributions from other participants at the session about other ways of sustainability:

Jakarta - funding from NGOs, webhosting, providing services

Zati? (not sure if the spelling is right?) - selling footage to media organisations, small fundraising teams, volunteer work

having multiple streams of funding, other companies, government, donations, membership fees, fundraising activists labour unions

G8 Media - funding from Toyota, Buddhist groups & temples, NGOs, selling videos as education tools to universities and schools

Dina - Open Society Institute head office in Europe have development in different areas such as information, women's issues.Dina also spoke a little bit about Global Voices

The US has different types of funding and infrastructure, churches fund progressive media activists

organising bands and concerts - most bands are prepared to perform for free, streamers and banners, selling pirated videos, newspapers, doing troubleshooting work for NGO's computers, raffles

help from part time members who support full time workers, rely on donations, help from other organisations who have similar issues, work donated from foreign activists

selling organic tempeh, making patches, selling paintings and other visual arts. Ford Foundation of Jakarta - Heidi been working here for 8 months. Work in many areas such as governance, sexuality, media, arts and culture, indigenous weaving, online activism media work. There are weak institutions in Indonesian society. Where does funding come from? Sometimes it is not clear when people receive funding as to the origins of that funding.

money from Hong Kong govt, proposals, universities, social welfare, video workshops, selling videos to schools, screenings, send out emails to the networks, working together

Sam - organising small groups of people who blog in Chinese and Malaysian, have singing competitions and then create brands for these people, have trophies etc grants from funding agencies, create a pool of money that they use to pay for hire of buildings etc, have approx 400 members. sell t-shirts and collect fees, sponsorship of ipods for prizes, sponsorship among the rich bloggers, funding from foundations and also have volunteers (whew! Sorry I think I may have got my details muddled up for this one, too busy listening :-))

Yi Hua - In the first 5- 6 years they made websites for NGOs at cheap prices and also blogging and the within the last 2- 3 years they receive donations every month. Have 2 full tine workers and others are volunteers, teaching, funding from govt art dept but the govt don't care how they use the money. Sometimes they reject funding because if their policies amd funding is not ongoing because they don't want the organisation to grow...Taiwan doesn't have a govt??

Loose activist network, options - social movement organisation to collaboration, Korea federation for Live streaming, public local media centre funded by the govt, facilities, media activists group have realtionship with local media centre, lending facilities, equipment, can support a small amount of money, don't go to the govt...

Oranga Whenua / Jo - many streams of funding within business, bread and butter line, exhibitions selling work, contract work teaching art and photography in my own language, contracted to work in health, some funded through govt, other funding won't take from govt such as lotteries funding which comes from gaming machines because it is their own people using the machines. In Aotearoa, there are specific funding for Maori, Maori in business, health funds etc. Networking is really important and planning ahead of time so one knows what is coming up and to keep the cashflow going...

EngageMedia - Very little money in the first 1.5 years. Have four part time people who also work in other jobs. Organising ahead is important and having a dedicated funding person would be really great!

Sasha - relationship with universities, independent documentaries selling to institutions and libraries, collaborations on projects - what is something that we all need? Print media - get ads from progressive organisations. Kumbit - work on managed concensus.

Tiffany / MIRO - Downhill battle, file sharing, advising others on issues, environment etc, political networking - making a name for themselves and so people come to them for advice on specific things, sought out a rich person who funded them and had the same philosophy, bridging funding through other work.

Nate / Plone 4 artists - social sourcing, partners, consultancy, partnerships, micropledge - holds money - can help sustain over time. Other funders unesco, chipin.com, fundable.com
